Lane Furniture was founded in 1912 in Altavista, Virginia by John Lane. As a young man, John had always been fascinated by woodworking and design. He started out making handcrafted furniture pieces for friends and family in his grandfather’s workshop. Word of John’s beautiful creations soon spread throughout the community.

What began as a hobby quickly turned into a full-time business. In 1925, John opened the first Lane Furniture storefront in Altavista. In the early years, Lane Furniture produced classic American style furniture made from solid oak and maple. John’s mission was to provide quality, affordable furniture direct from the manufacturer.

Over the decades, Lane Furniture has grown into one of America’s most iconic furniture brands. As consumer tastes evolved, so did Lane’s designs. By the 1950s, Lane was creating mid-century modern furnishings to meet demand. In the 1960s, Lane introduced new materials like acrylic and embraced bold new shapes and silhouettes.

While many furniture companies have come and gone, Lane Furniture has stood the test of time.

Expanding the Business

In 1968, Lane Furniture was acquired by United Furniture Corporation based in North Carolina. This provided the capital and resources for Lane to expand nationally. Under United Furniture Corporation’s leadership, Lane opened manufacturing facilities and warehouses across the United States.

Although production capabilities grew, Lane continued to focus on domestic manufacturing. Many Lane furnishings say “Made in the USA” today. Keeping manufacturing in America allows Lane to maintain tight quality control and quickly adapt to market trends.

Commitment to Quality

At Lane, quality is never sacrificed for quantity. Lane Furniture brings an unmatched standard of excellence to every piece produced. All wood furniture frames feature double dowelled construction and corner block reinforcement for durability.

Lane utilizes only top-grade lumber harvested from sustainable forests. Skilled American craftsmen meticulously inspect each product multiple times throughout the manufacturing process. Rigorous quality testing ensures long-lasting performance and safety.

This commitment to doing things the right way has earned Lane Furniture the trust of generations of customers.
